2019 New Year Letter from CDO Advisory Committee

Dear Foundation Leader:

Happy New Year! Thank you for your engagement and support throughout 2018.  As we begin 2019, here are updates including opportunities to be involved.

CDO Hub
The CDO Hub continues to be the main source of communication to CDOs and Hospital Leaders. We encourage you to read and submit articles, best practices and comments as we strengthen this tool. We will continue to send a bimonthly email reminding you of the newest posts to the Hub. We look forward to your increased engagement. Let us know how this can be a better communication tool for you and all of us. Send ideas to Emily Cawley, Director, Hospital Relations, at ecawley@cmnhospitals.org.

2019 Partnership Recognition
The new partnership model began on January 1. This milestone could not have been reached without your engagement. This Herculean effort took 18 months and was led by Phil Salerno, President & Chief Development Officer, New Jersey’s Children’s Specialized Hospital.  Also, on his committee was DeAnn Marshall, President Children’s Hospital Foundation at Children’s National and Blake Bard, Chief Development Officer at Freeman Health System.  The committee was supported by the CMN Hospitals staff which included Teri Nestel, Chief Administrative Officer, Spencer Brown, VP Finance and Burke Bess, Controller. The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Board of Trustees recognized Phil with a ‘Resolution’ at the Fall Business Meeting (click HERE to see the Resolution). As a reminder if you have questions about the plan click HERE for the FAQ or contact Teri Nestel, Chief Administrative Officer, CMN Hospitals, at tnestel@cmnhospitals.org or Shirley Rogers, Senior Vice President, Hospital Relations, CMN Hospitals, at srogers@cmnhospitals.org.

CDO Summit Attendance Policy
CMN Hospitals had received increasing requests from hospital and foundations with large development staffs to be allowed to send a senior leader in lieu of the CDO’s attendance to the CDO Summit.  After considerable discussion, in August 2017 the Advisory Committee began the attendance pilot and participants were identified based on these two measures:

  • 2016 top 30 members based on fundraising results
  • 2016 top 30 members based on fees paid

When blending both lists there was a total of 36 markets as posted HERE.

If the respective CDO was unavailable to attend, they would send another senior leader to the meeting.  This was not an invitation for members to send their CMN Hospitals program director.  Rather, the expectation was a senior decision maker from the member hospital development/foundation would attend.  Someone who:

  • Has a portfolio of responsibilities including CMN Hospitals but which is broader and deeper than this one program.
  • Can be a decision maker for her/his development program at each meeting.
  • Will provide continuity by attending the CDO meeting each year.

Following the success of the attendance pilot, during the past two CDO Summits, the policy was adopted at the 2018 Fall Business Meeting. We are analyzing the 2018 data (using the aforementioned measures) to determine the markets that will be eligible to send another staff member in a CDO’s place to CDO Summits. The current markets listed, as posted HERE, will remain the eligible markets for the CDO Summit in March at #ChildrensHospitalsWeek. We will notify the network when we have an updated list for 2018 which will be available late March. We will continue to monitor to ensure this attendance policy proves to be of value and is valued.

T.E.A.M. 365 CDO
Sub-Committee: Blake Bard CDO Freeman Health System; Jena Pado, CDO Dayton Children’s; Sandy Ogletree, CDO UMC Children’s Hospital
T.E.A.M. 365, the engagement and mentor program for CDOs, is moving forward this spring with exciting new opportunities to enhance membership experience. First, recruitment is underway for experienced leaders to mentor new CDOs within the membership beginning in February. This will be a great opportunity to increase membership knowledge for both the mentor and the newest CDO colleagues. Secondly, timely onboarding and easy access to membership information will be coordinated to offer new CDOs more understanding of the CMN Hospitals value proposition and knowledge of their organization’s membership. T.E.AM. 365 is focused on the continuing engagement of the CDO community and enhancing the membership experience for all CDOs and leaders of member institutions. If you are interested in mentoring or know a new CDO or leader that would benefit from this opportunity, please contact Emily Cawley, Director, Hospital Relations, at ecawley@cmnhospitals.org.

MARKET ALIGNMENT PLAN (MAP)
Sub-Committee: Sue Doliner, VP Development Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital; Phil Salerno, President & CDO Children’s Specialized; Grant Stirling, EVP & CDO, Lurie Children’s
The Market Realignment Task Force has made great strides with their task to propose a market realignment strategy and process for all USA Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Members.  Thank you to the 94 CDOs who responded to the Market Realignment Survey and the many CDOs who provided tremendous insights having already worked together with a neighboring Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals member and realigned their markets. The MAP Task Force had the benefit of hearing numerous lessons learned and what worked well and what did not.

The tenor of the upcoming Market Realignment recommendation (which will be shared in draft form the week of January 20) is based on significant input from CMNH Members and Partner.  The Market Realignment options promote a collegial approach which aims at building trust among Members, is transparent, clear and predictable, assumes positive intent by all CMNH Members, applies rigor in defining the data and why a change is requested, supports donor intent and locally based CMNH Partners, advances healthy dialogue between Members, achieves timely and respectful communications.

If on the rare occasion negotiations fail to reach an agreement in a timely or collegial manner, the recommendation provides for a Binding Decision based on a peer CDO MAP Council review including a final recommendation of both market assignments and financial commitments between Members to be ratified as a binding decision by the CMNH Board of Trustees.

We continue to add examples to the Best Practice Guide for Market Realignment Discussions and many members have found this to be a valuable resource.  In recent months, three hospitals have completed market realignments and corresponding financial arrangements with the assistance of the Best Practice Guide.  Click HERE for the Territory Alignment Best Territory Guide.  The work of the MAP Task Force is scheduled to be presented to the CMNH Board in March with the final Board action in the June 26, 2019 meeting.  If you wish to begin discussions with a neighboring market you may of course do so at any time in the best interest of donor intent when giving locally to CMN Hospitals in support of local hospitals and specialize care.

CDO ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Advisory Committee fulfills the need for Chief Development Officers throughout North America, to offer objective insights, by providing support and council to the CMN Hospitals President, leadership and the Board of Trustees on communication, strategy and policy that will help strengthen the interest and values shared by the network. To accomplish this purpose, the committee will:

  • Serve as a liaison by representing the unique interests and characteristics of a diverse membership of hospitals/foundation, regardless of size, structure, or other circumstance.
  • Improve communication to hospital/foundation leadership, and provide a mechanism for two-way communication
  • Facilitate the communication of relevant information that would help CMN Hospitals leadership and board better understand the nature of healthcare philanthropy trends, challenges and opportunities.

It is with great gratitude and appreciation we recognize CMN Hospitals CDO Advisory Committee Vice Chairs Jennifer Gillivan, President and CEO, IWK Health Centre Foundation and Fred Scarborough, Foundation President and CDO, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, as their service has come to an end.  We thank them for their leadership, commitment and dedication to the mission of CMN Hospitals on your behalf.

We are pleased to welcome the following new members to the Advisory Committee:

  • Steve Rum, VP of Development and Alumni Relations, Johns Hopkins Medicine; Member: CMN Hospitals Board of Trustee. Steve will serve as Vice Chair on the CDO Advisory Committee
  • Jenine Rabin, Executive Vice President, Foundation, John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Tampa
  • Grant Stirling, Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

With Jennifer Gillivan’s departure our intent is for the board chair to fill the seat with a member of Canada’s Children’s Hospital Foundations (CCHF).
