New Summit Attendance Policy Adopted
John Bel reported that the previous pilot regarding Summit attendance has been adopted as policy. The pilot program identified 35 hospitals based on money raised, fee paid, and percent increase. These hospitals were invited to have another senior leader attend the CMN Hospital Summit meetings in place of their CDO if the CDO was unable to attend. The attendee may not be the hospital program director, but rather a senior decision maker for the development/foundation. As always, a CDO is welcome to have a second senior development leader attend the Summit with them. The eligible hospitals will be reviewed each February/March once national fundraising results are finalized for the previous year.
Five Year Strategic Growth Plan Discussion
John Lauck, President & CEO, CMN Hospitals, led a discussion regarding CMN Hospital’s plan for growth. He posed the following questions:
- What’s our appetite for growth?
- Given growth profile, what is our plan to get there?
- How do we sequence the plan?
John announced the items he has asked CMN Hospitals to focus on as areas of growth: partnering position with hospitals assistance – several of our new partners have come through relationships that hospital partners have (Aflac, Game Stop, Nordstrom), Dance Marathon – specifically with rollout of a high school DM program, and big data – we gather massive amounts of data about our donors and use it to help us steward and increase the donations to CMN Hospitals. Click HERE to see the strategy document outlining the various thoughts and ideas from the national staff, BOT, and governance committee as we begin exploring the opportunities for growth. John asked for input and feedback from the CDOs as it is imperative to the success of the network. ACTION: If you were unable to attend, please read the document and send any feedback or questions to Emily Cawley (ecawley@cmnhospitals.org) who will compile the information and share with John Lauck and John Bozard.
Grant Stirling Presentation: Old School, New School, Next School; Keeping Ahead of the Curve for Fundraising
Grant Stirling, Executive Vice President & CDO, Lurie Children’s Hospital Foundation, spoke about the changes ahead in fundraising. There are moments in time that focus on an issue, which combine around a cause, that then contributes to the creation of a movement. Every movement has a face. Who is the face of our movement, and what is our cause? Click HERE for Grant’s complete presentation.
Market the Cause Discussion
John Lauck & DeAnn Marshall, President, Children’s Hospital Foundation Children’s National Health System, CMN Hospitals CDO Advisory Committee, spoke of the need for the network to unite and market the cause of children’s hospitals. Dawn Wilcox, Vice President, Corporate Partnerships, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, was invited to present CHLA’s Make March Matter campaign as a case study of something the network could do in the quest to unite to market the cause. Dawn showed how they built the campaign, how successful it has become, and how easily the program could be adapted to all markets. Click HERE to download the Make March Matter presentation. ACTION: Share feedback on Make March Matter and or other ideas of how members can unite to market the cause with the goal of making children’s hospitals known as the #1 children’s cause in North America. Please send feedback and questions to Emily Cawley (ecawley@cmnhospitals.org) who will compile the information and share with the market the cause sub-committee of John Lauck, DeAnn Marshall, Jennifer Gillivan, Craig Sorensen, Clark Sweat, and Shirley Rogers.
New Business Committee Engagement
Jenine Rabin, Executive Vice President, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Foundation, shared her experience in working with CMN Hospital’s New Business team to bring Nordstrom on board. She cultivated the relationship with a member of her board who is part of Nordstrom’s leadership and when the time was right, introduced the board member to the CMN Hospital’s family. Her efforts have brought on CMN Hospital’s newest corporate partner who will execute a holiday campaign this year (Chico’s was also a national partner that Jenine brought on a few years ago). Jenine challenged her colleagues to think of connections they have that could be a benefit to the network. ACTION: If you have a new business opportunity or have questions about the process contact Peter Ries, SVP New Business, CMN Hospitals (pries@cmnhospitals.org).
Harness – Miracle Change Makers
Miraj Patel – Founder & CEO, Harness, introduced us to the Harness organization and the concept of rounding up your debit and credit card transactions and donating the change to CMN Hospital member hospitals. Market Alignment Project Discussion
Phil Salerno, President & CDO, Children’s Specialized Hospital, CMN Hospitals CDO Advisory Committee and Grant Stirling, Executive Vice President & CDO, Lurie Children’s Hospital Foundation walked the group through the Market Alignment Project (MAP) and asked for feedback on three questions:
- What do member hospitals expect from CMN Hospitals in handling market alignment issues?
- What should the standard criteria be to make the decision and who should make that decision?
- Who should bear the cost of mediating market alignment issues?
Developments of the project will be posted to the CDO Hub. Click HERE to see the MAP presentation slides and HERE for feedback from the questions. ACTION: Please send feedback and questions to Emily Cawley (ecawley@cmnhospitals.org) who will compile and share with the MAP Committee members: Phil Salerno, Sue Doliner, and Grant Stirling.
